AGENTIC COMMERCE EXPLAINED
What is agentic commerce, and how does it work on Shopify?
Agentic commerce is shopping done through AI agents. A shopper asks an assistant such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot for a product, and the agent finds, compares and helps buy it. On Shopify, the Agentic Storefronts channel sends your products through Shopify Catalog to these assistants, and orders land in your Shopify admin.
The switch is only the start. AI agents pick products using the data they can read: titles, descriptions, options, images, reviews, stock, prices and shop policies. BRISTM audits that data, fixes the gaps in Shopify, sets up the channels and tracks AI-referred orders. For AI beyond the storefront, see our eCommerce AI solutions.
If an AI agent can't read your product, it can't recommend it.
WHY STORES GET MISSED BY AI AGENTS
AI shopping agents skip products they can't understand.
An assistant answering "best waterproof hiking boots under £150" doesn't browse your homepage. It reads structured product data and picks what it can match with confidence. Thin or messy data means another brand gets recommended instead.
-
Product titles and descriptions written only for people
We rewrite key product data so it answers real questions: material, size, fit, use case and who it is for.
-
Missing attributes, GTINs and variant details
We fill Shopify category, metafields, barcodes and variant options so agents can filter and compare your products correctly.
-
Agentic Storefronts switched on, but nothing checked
We review Shopify Catalog listing quality, which AI channels are live for your store, and what shoppers actually see there.
-
Unclear shipping, returns and policies
Agents check shop policies before recommending. We make shipping, returns and warranty terms complete and easy to read.
-
No way to tell if AI sends any sales
We set up tracking for AI-referred sessions and orders in Shopify and GA4, so you can see which assistant brought each sale.

HOW WE GET STORES READY FOR AI AGENTS
Our agentic commerce process, from audit to AI-referred orders.
We treat AI assistants as a new sales channel with its own rules. First we see what agents can read today, then fix the data, switch on the channels and measure what they sell.

The agentic commerce stack, from Shopify Catalog to AI checkout.

AGENTIC COMMERCE BY INDUSTRY
What AI shopping agents need to know about your category.
Shoppers ask assistants different questions in each category. A skincare buyer asks about skin type, a furniture buyer about dimensions. We shape your product data around the questions your customers actually ask.
- Fashion & ApparelFit, fabric, size charts and colour names written so agents can answer "will this fit" and "what goes with it".
- Beauty & CosmeticsSkin type, shade, ingredients and finish as structured attributes, so assistants match products to a shopper's concerns.
- Health & WellnessAccurate ingredients, dosage and dietary tags, with careful claim wording that agents can repeat without risk.
- Jewelry & AccessoriesMetal, purity, stone size and grade stored per variant, so agents can compare pieces and prices correctly.
- Home & FurnitureDimensions, materials, assembly and delivery times, so assistants can answer "will it fit my room" with confidence.
- Electronics & GadgetsModel numbers, specs, compatibility and GTINs complete, because agents compare technical products line by line.
- Sports & FitnessActivity, level, sizing and terrain or surface details, so agents match gear to how the shopper will use it.
- Pet SuppliesSpecies, breed size, life stage and ingredients as attributes, so assistants recommend the right food or kit.
- Food & BeveragesFlavour, allergens, dietary labels and pack sizes clear, so agents can answer gifting and dietary questions.
- B2B & WholesaleProduct codes, pack quantities and trade terms structured for buying agents and procurement tools that reorder at scale.

Agentic commerce for Shopify is selling through AI assistants that find, compare and help buy products for shoppers. Shopify's Agentic Storefronts channel sends products from Shopify Catalog to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, and the orders appear in your Shopify admin like any other sale.
Shopify stores reach ChatGPT through the Agentic Storefronts channel, managed from the Shopify admin with no extra app. Shopify says it is enabled automatically for eligible stores selling to US buyers. In ChatGPT, checkout currently happens on your own storefront, and orders show ChatGPT referral attribution in your admin.
The Universal Commerce Protocol is an open standard, launched by Google with Shopify in January 2026, that defines how AI agents discover products, check out, link accounts and manage orders with merchants. It works with the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) for payments and powers checkout in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app.
Shopify states there are no extra transaction fees for Agentic Storefronts beyond your standard payment processing rates. The real cost is the work to make your product data, policies and tracking good enough for agents to choose you. BRISTM scopes that after an AI readiness audit, priced at [X].
Not fully yet. As of September 2026, Shopify lists the AI channels for merchants selling to US buyers, and Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout for select US-based shops. Stores anywhere can prepare now: clean product data and structured data also help Google and AI search in every market.
Yes. Shopify's Agentic plan, available globally since March 2026, lets brands on other platforms add products to Shopify Catalog and sell across AI channels without a full move. Brands that want the complete Shopify stack can also consider moving to Shopify, which we handle as a separate project.
AI shopping agents need complete, accurate product data: clear titles, descriptions that answer buying questions, the right Shopify category, variant options, GTINs, good images, reviews, live price and stock, and clear shipping and returns policies. Shopify Catalog scores listing quality on description completeness, image coverage, price and policy completeness.
BRISTM builds Shopify stores, Shopify apps and AI agents, so we work on every layer agentic commerce touches: product data, theme schema, checkout and tracking. We start with an audit, fix the data that matters most, switch on the right channels and report AI-referred orders monthly.
